Essex Golf is responsible for coordinating Course Rating and Slope Rating across affiliated clubs within the county, in line with the World Handicap System (WHS).
All eligible golf courses are required by England Golf to be rated at 10-year intervals, or sooner if significant changes are made to the course layout.
All tees are rated from both a Scratch Golfer and Bogey Golfer perspective
Rating visits are carried out by trained volunteer Course Raters
A typical visit involves a team of up to six raters and takes 4–5 hours on site
Following the visit, detailed calculations and checks are completed, requiring additional administration time for each set of tees
Initial course ratings are part-subsidised by England Golf and are free to clubs
Re-ratings or additional visits may require a contribution towards costs
If a course undertakes any structural alteration or layout change, the County must be notified, as a re-rating may be required
All approved Course and Slope Ratings are published centrally by England Golf following validation.
You can also view course rating information via the USGA Course Rating and Slope Database. Please note that while this database is global, GB & Ireland courses operate under England Golf governance, and some criteria and presentation may differ.
