Essex Golf
Born in Liverpool, Nick has lived in Essex since 1987.
Nick spent over 30 years working as an Accountant, mainly in the defence industry, before becoming increasingly involved in golf administration.
Nick was a member at Channels GC from 1987 to 2017, serving on the Greens and Handicap Committees, spending four years as Competition Secretary, and becoming Club Captain in 2011. Nick then served as Honorary Secretary from 2013 to 2015. He is now a member of Chelmsford Golf Club.
Nick has been a member of the GCMA since 2013 and represented Essex as the England Golf South Eastern Group delegate from 2017 to 2022. Nick also served as EGU County Secretary from 2016 to 2022 and was County President for 2024/25.
Karen spent 30 years as a PE teacher before taking early retirement in 1994 and joining Colne Valley Golf Club.
She became the club’s ELCGA representative in 1997 and has been part of the county scene ever since.
At Colne Valley she served as Lady Captain in 2001 and 2024, and was Club President from 2004 to 2011. Her county roles have included Junior Organiser (2007–2010), County Opens Organiser (2012–2015) and Harris Bowl Organiser (2018–2019), and she has continued to support the county junior girls throughout.
Karen was County Captain in 2020–2021, guiding the Association through a difficult period and overseeing the East Region County Match Days at Stoke by Nayland. In 2025 she became the final President of ELCGA and she is now looking forward to serving as the first President of Essex Golf.
Steve joined Stoke by Nayland Golf Club in 1999 and quickly grew to love the game, although starting late did not give him the ability to play well. He became Club Captain in 2014 and Club President in 2020. During his three years as President, the club replaced the traditional committee structure with one small board looking after all aspects of golf for the membership (SBN is a proprietary club). He continues to be the Chairman of the Handicaps Committee.
In 2016 he joined the County Team. He was elected President-Elect in 2023 and, with unification, continues as President-Elect for one more year. In addition to his continuing county role, he also took on the role of England Golf representative in mid-2025.
After leaving school, Derek trained as an accountant before moving to Britvic Ltd in Essex, where he progressed to Chief Accountant.
In 1987, he joined Champion Photochemistry Limited, becoming Managing Director of the Brentwood-based company and later taking on international responsibilities across France, South Africa and India. In 2001, he was appointed Deputy Group Chairperson and served as President of the British Photographic Association.
After a period as Managing Director of Snappy Snaps and a brief retirement, Derek returned to work as a business consultant. He became EGU Treasurer in 2024 and Finance Director in 2025.
Now retired, Derek is a member at Chelmsford Golf Club and enjoys golf, hockey umpiring, walking football, the gym and time with his family.
Brian has been a member of Three Rivers Golf & Country Club since 1984. During that time he has taken on a wide range of roles, including Club Captain in both 1999 and 2006, Thornton Cup Team Manager and Junior Organiser.
He joined the Essex Golf Union in 2010 and worked with the County’s U16 and U18 squads, guiding the U18s to the Boys’ County Championship title in 2014. Brian has contributed to several County committees, served as County President in 2019, and acted as the England Golf County Voting Member for six years from 2019.
His long involvement in club and county golf, together with his commercial and marketing experience, brings valuable insight to the EGL Board.
Kate joined Crondon Park Golf Club in May 2004 after moving to Essex from Jersey and has been an active member and team player ever since. She served on the Ladies’ Committee at various points between 2006 and 2025, taking on roles including Secretary and Handicap Secretary. She was also Ladies’ Captain in both 2011/12 and 2023/24.
Kate joined the ELCGA Management Team in 2021, where she held positions as Bronze Shield Organiser and Women in Golf Charter Champion before becoming Vice-Captain in 2024. In the same year, she also took on the responsibilities of ELCGA Junior Organiser and England Golf Voting Member.
With her broad experience in club and county golf and her dedication to developing the women’s game in Essex, Kate brings strong insight and energy to the EGL Board.
Josie joined Langdon Hills Golf Club in 1998 and remains an active and enthusiastic member. She served as Lady Captain in 2013/14 and was Competition Secretary from 2021 to 2024.
She joined the ELCGA Management Team in 2019 and took on the role of Harris Bowl Organiser before becoming County Secretary in 2023. In that position, Josie played an important part in guiding the team through the unification process.
A qualified Level 2 Golf Referee since 2021, Josie is also a valued member of the Essex Referees Squad and a member of the Essex Rules Education Team visiting clubs in Essex.
Her deep knowledge of golf in Essex and her commitment to the game makes her an excellent addition to the EGL Board.
John has been deeply involved in Essex golf for over fifty years. He has been a member of Woodford Golf Club since 1973 and Wanstead Golf Club since 1976, serving in roles including Captain, Centenary Captain, President and long-standing committee member.
At county level, John joined the Essex Golf Union Board in 1991 and has held many significant positions, including Chairman of the Board, County First Team Manager, Chairman of Selectors and Chairman of the Championship Committee. He served as President of the Essex Golf Union in 2013–2014 and represented the county on both the England Golf Executive and the England Golf Board between 2009 and 2019.
An EGU-qualified Rules Official, John has refereed widely across county and regional events. Before retiring in 2010, he had a successful international career in the construction and fire engineering industry. He is also a Freeman of the City of London.
Michael has served as the Director of Coaching since 2021, bringing a blend of high-level playing experience and academic expertise to the development of golfers across all levels. A low-handicap player, Michael has competed within elite sporting environments and understands the technical, physical, and mental demands required to excel at all levels including national.
With a background in Sport Science and people management, he combines evidence-based coaching principles with practical insights to manage and guide the team of coaching professionals to develop, manage and deliver the yearly programme. Michael is known for his approachable management style, clear communication, and commitment to creating a positive, enjoyable learning/working environment for all around him.
Dedicated to advancing coaching standards across the County, he works closely with athletes, coaches, and development programmes to support long-term growth in the County.
Sharon was an important part of the ELCGA for more than eleven years, contributing across a wide range of key roles. During her time with the Association, she has served as Handicap Meetings Organiser, Junior Organiser, Director, England Golf Voting Member, County Captain and, most recently, Honorary Treasurer. She was also a member of the Unification Committee and played a significant role in bringing the Association and the Union together.
At club level, Sharon is a long-standing member of Bentley Golf Club. She was Ladies’ Captain in 2019 and has been the Ladies’ Handicap Secretary since 2020.
Sharon brings extensive experience, strong organisational skills and a deep commitment to women’s golf in Essex, making her a highly valued member of the EGL Board.
Mark currently serves as the County Handicap Adviser. He is a long-standing member of both club and county committees, contributing at Board level within the county structure.
Alongside his volunteer roles, Mark brings professional experience in golf travel and tourism, as well as golf club management. He is also Level 1 qualified in the Rules of Golf.
Mark’s blend of club leadership, county experience and professional golf industry knowledge makes him a valuable part of the team.
